This is a link to an online timer. It is customizable as either a stopwatch or traditional countdown timer, and there are a variety of chimes to choose from varying from attention-grabbing to more soothing. It can be set at each use or preprogrammed for a specific time allotment.
I plan on using this in the classroom to help demystify the concept of time for young students during activities. The timer can be displayed on the overhead at the front of the room so all students can see how much time is left for both administrative and learning tasks. For example, if students are instructed to spend 3 minutes to clean up their areas for a transition, the timer can show students how much time is left and encourage them to complete their tasks. If students are ready to go when the timer rings, positive reinforcement will be given. A timer can also be useful for students with attention issues, since they will have a reminder of how much time is left to focus on an academic task, enabling students to see the school day in much smaller chunks. A visual timer also can help the teacher provide equal rotations during lessons using station time.
